The gel that could end the misery of cleft palates - An article in ‘Mail on line’
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1259069/The-gel-end-misery-cleft-palates.html
A gel that heals cleft palates has been created by Oxford scientists in a breakthrough that offers hope to thousands of children. Cleft palates and lips are Britain's most common birth defect and affect around 1,000 babies a year. Although they can be corrected through surgery, those most severely affected can suffer problems with their speech and appearance for years to come. Researcher David Bucknall said the gel was significantly better than anything we can do now'. The gel is similar to the one used in soft contact lenses. It slowly absorbs water, swelling to ten times its original size. Tests under a £200 million 'super-microscope' at the Science and Technology Facilities Council in Oxfordshire ensured the gel's structure was right. The researchers plan to insert small discs of the gel under the skin, close to the cleft. Once there, they expand as they take in water from the body and new skin grows over them. They are removed six or eight weeks later and the fresh skin used to stitch up the cleft. Researchers from Oxford University, the city's John Radcliffe Hospital and the Georgia Institute of Technology in the U.S., hope the technique could be in widespread use by 2013.
