CLAPA-Cambridge Branch
Supporting Families
Throughout East of England

“Our stories so far - real case studies by real parents” A very special thank you to Clive and Mary-Jane Mear of Caddington, Bedfordshire and Susan Burton, Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist, for designing and publishing a new book with the above title, giving the stories of five sets of parents following their children's experiences with CLAPA and the story of their treatment for PRS and cleft palate. The team will use these books to encourage parents who find themselves dealing with the reality of having a baby with a cleft or PRS. The book contains case studies accompanied by pictures, supplied by the parents. The book brings home the reality that having a cleft or PRS is not as rare as you'd think, and that there is help and support on hand. A chance for new parents to see 'the light at the end of the tunnel'.

4 SETS OF AN AUDIOVISUAL EQUIPMENT, @ £3,278.00 for speech recording used by the SLTs at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and SLTs working with the core team in Stevenage, Norwich, Peterborough and North Cambridgeshire. This will ensure that the quality of service is more equitable and will also make it possible for clinicians locally to carry out video therapy which may substantially increase the effectiveness of therapy. Children will be able to use DVDs at home, what may encourage more regular practise. We have received a generous donations of £2,2000.00 from “Cambridge News Press Relief Fund” for a professional standard video camera with accessories used by SLTs at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Peterborough and North Cambridgeshire outreach cleft clinics.
Oxygen Desaturation Monitors with blue tooth connectors on D2 Ward @ £5,500 (April 2009) . This equipment will be highly beneficial to children on the ward who need to be monitored before and after surgery as the old individual monitors required constant attention by staff nurses and caused considerable stress to patients and careers, as they frequently became detached and the alarm sounded by the individuals bed. The committee agreed to finance £3,000 for Saturation Monitors and £2,500 for wireless interconnection, so that the information during the night is on the screen at the nursing station (and the bleeps don't sound by the bedside and wake everyone up). Total cost was over £7,000 and the difference was paid by the Addenbrooke’s Cleft Lip and Palate Fund 9562. A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO MR DAVID SAPSFORD, CONSULTANT ANESTHETIST, for all his help and effort for getting them installed on the ward.

The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) is delivering a communications campaign focusing on reconstructive surgery and children, and the skilled work of plastic surgeons in treating children with congenital conditions to help them develop into happy and fulfilled adults. It was lovely to see William Napier, who is 15 yeas old taking part and promoting the campaign, focusing on his positive experience of his procedures led by Mr Per Hall. We are looking forward to seeing William’s case study in the national health pages and regional press. More information will be available on our website in due course.
